as a common argument on both sides, I think. I don’t think that there’s a need to de-stigmatize anybody, but I think it’s important for the transgender community to stand up for themselves, because if they don’t, no one else will. And it’s also important for the cis community to understand what the transgender community is going through and what they’re fighting for.
GC: In terms of these legal cases coming to fruition, what do you think about the anti-trans legislation that we’ve seen recently, especially in North Carolina?
EH: The thing I’m really worried about is that once you start to silence a community by saying that you can’t be out there, because you’re going to be accused of being a rapist or a murderer or whatever, that it’s going to start to erode the whole community.
I’m also worried about the kind of regulations that are passed that I feel like are more invasive than they have to be, or there aren’t any rules passed at all. I feel like the power that is granted to these governments to pass these laws has been used inappropriately, and I’m really afraid that that’s going to erode the whole community.
There is a level of — I don’t want to say misinformation, but I don’t think that it’s very informed and educated. I think that if we didn’t have this kind of transphobia and transphobia is on the rise, that there would be a level of education about these issues.
GC: What advice would you give to any trans person who is questioning their gender identity?
EH: I think it’s really important for someone who’s questioning their gender to realize that there’s nothing to worry about. Just because you’re questioning your gender doesn’t mean that you’re going to think you’re going to be a different person, or that you’re going to be gay or straight, or something else.
It’s important for someone who is questioning their gender to know that that’s okay. There are a lot of people who are questioning and a lot of people who are questioning in the trans community. It’s not like something that only affects this group of
